Hot Milk with Cinnamon

Salep, which is a sweet and comforting classic drink special to Turkey, is a very warming winter beverage made from ground up wild orchids and milk, and served with cinnamon.

A traditional Turkish winter beverage, salep is an incredibly delicious. It was also served at that time of the Ottoman Empire. Salep is a hot drink made with milk and salep powder sprinkled with cinnamon. The powder of salep is made with a mixture of different spices, and its flavour is unique.

There are some things you need to know about salep, the indispensable drink of winter season. With its pleasant and delicious taste, and the smell of cinnamon, salep is the sultan of our hearts. Salep is a good remedy for sore throats and colds, in addition to being delicious. Salep especially increases your body temperature, protecting you from cold. That is why it is one of the most consumed beverages in the winter season.

Wild Orchids: Salep is produced from the ground root of beautiful and exotic wild orchids of the same name, mixed with milk and cinnamon. It takes 7 or 8 years for orchids to grow, that is why the salep is very valuable.

Salep is protected by Turkey and not exported.

Delicious Hot Drink

How to Serve: Turkish people like to drink salep with a sprinkle of cinnamon to feel very strong taste. Usually, it is consumed alone, but if the person wants to eat something, a pie or cake would be a good idea.

Winter Drink: Salep is very special, very typical Turkish drink and its season is limited. You can only find it in the winter months, officially between October and April.

Where to Find: Salep, which is a hot creamy drink, is drunk in coffee shops and tea gardens especially in winter. It is also easily found in most patisseries as well as the ferries running between the three sides of Turkey. If you are lucky enough to travel to Turkey, you may be able to purchase some authentic salep flour to take home with you.

Steps to Make It

The tip of a delicious salep is hidden in proportion of ingredients. Necessary ingredients for a 5 person salep;

  • 1 liter of milk (5 glasses)
  • 1 tablespoon salep
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • A sprinkle of cinnamon

Blend salep and sugar in a separate bowl. Add this mixture to the boiling milk and stir for 20 minutes slowly. In order for the salep in it to melt and not to be lumpy, it must be mixed well. After 20 minutes, you can serve your salep with cinnamon.
