One of Istanbul's most fascinating monuments, Galata Tower was built in the 14th century by the Genoese in Istanbul. Galata Tower is where Hezarfen Ahmed Celebi flew from. He was the first man ever to fly using wings.

Galata Tower is one of the most iconic symbols of Istanbul. It also features to be one of the highest and oldest towers of the city.

This famous observatory tower gets its name from the area where it is situated. At the top of the Galata Tower, you can enjoy a panoramic landscape that covers a great deal of Istanbul, including the Golden Horn, the Bosphorus and the Historical Peninsula. In the 19th century many artists drew the panoramic view of Istanbul from the Galata Tower.

The formal restaurant on the upper floor of the tower, which is currently open to visitors, features traditional cuisine as well as authentic Turkish dance performances. You can enjoy this restaurant or can capture amazing Golden Horn moments. The little square at the foot of Galata Tower is home to cute restaurants, which offer a gratifying lunch. Surrounded by wine bars and great clubs, Galata is a hotspot for entertainment lovers.

History of the Tower

Galata Tower was built in 1348 by the Genoese and it gets its name from the area where it is situated. It was the highest point of the city walls and called the Tower of Christ. In Ottoman times Galata Tower was used to detain prisoners of war and later became an fire tower between 1717 and 1962. It has been damaged by earthquakes and fires many times, but restored each time.

Hezarfen Ahmed Celebi: Hezarfen Ahmed Celebi was the first flying Turk from the Galata Tower during the Ottoman Empire of the 17th century.

UNESCO Tentative List

Galata Tower, which is one of the oldest towers in the world, was added to UNESCO Tentative List in 2020. It is among the outstanding universal values of Turkey.
