Kackar Mountains National Park, which offers different beauties with its rare plant species, forests, wildlife and glacial lakes, attracts the attention of nature lovers. The park is located around 70 km east of Rize in the Black Sea region of Turkey.

Kackar Mountains

Kackar Mountains or simply Kackars are a mountain range that rises above the Black Sea coast in eastern part of Turkey. Kackar Mountains at an elevation of 3937 m and mountain plateaus at about 3000 m in elevation are the highest parts of the North Anatolian Mountains. The area, which was declared as a national park in 1994, covers an area of 52.970 hectares.

Kackar Mountains National Park is situated in the most rainy forests of Turkey, therefore it has extremely rich alpine meadows and outstanding flora as well as unique in terms of streams. The areas around the Firtina River at the west of the mountains, and the Hemsin River on the east are covered with a rich flora. In accordance with the richness of flora, such as jackals, roe deer, wild boar, marten, hare, stoat, weasel, mammals, raptors, songbirds and wild rooster are available in the national park.

Kackar Mountains National Park is also one of the most biodiverse regions in the world. It has huge areas of mature evergreen forest, upland pastures, three glaciers and many glacial lakes.

What to Do

The national park attracts attention in all seasons with its unique natural habitat, beautiful plateaus and rich vegetation.

The Kackars are glaciated mountains that are alpine in character, with steep rocky peaks and numerous mountain lakes. Tourism activities in the park include hiking, camping, mountaineering and heli-skiing.

Ayder Plateau: Ayder Plateau has the best facilities in the park, especially suitable for a few days stay. Also there are specially designated camping areas in Camlihemsin. Trekking is increasingly popular in this area, and it is possible to hire a guide in Ayder and Camlihemsin.
