Discover Konya, home of Catalhoyuk
Catalhoyuk is known as one of the earliest settlements in the neolithic age, located in Cumra district of Konya. It is the largest and best preserved neolithic site found to date. There are no footpaths or streets between dwellings, so rooftops were their streets.
Catalhoyuk, a very large Neolithic and Chalcolithic prehistoric settlement in southern Anatolia, which existed from approximately 7400 - 5200 BC.
Neolithic Site of Catalhoyuk is truly a very important place, primarily because it is an extensive site that dates back to very early periods. Another feature that enhances the importance of this place is that it has survived to our day extremely well preserved.
Catalhoyuk tells us how humans made the transition to settled life and started farming. It is one of the best sites representing early society.
Catalhoyuk represents significant social change and development. The taller eastern mound contains eighteen levels of Neolithic occupation between 7400 - 6200 BC, including wall paintings, reliefs, sculptures and other symbolic and artistic features. Together they testify to the evolution of social organization and cultural practices as humans adapted to a sedentary life.
The western mound shows the evolution of cultural practices in the Chalcolithic period, from 6200 - 5200 BC.
Neolithic Site of Catalhoyuk provides important evidence of the transition from settled villages to urban agglomeration, which was maintained in the same location for over 2000 years. It features a unique streetless settlement of houses clustered back to back with roof access into the buildings.
Examine the houses, which were entered from the roof and which have preserved their integrity today. The houses in the east mound especially are rich in murals and other decorations. Discover these details. The settlement on the west mound is newer than that of the east mound. Try to figure out the differences.
Neolithic Site of Catalhoyuk, included to UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2012 on cultural criteria. There are magnificent examples of the art of the period on this wonderfully preserved site. That is why it has been declared a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.
