Discover Turkey and nationally protected wetlands
Turkey is very rich country in terms of botanical life and the ecological richness. With its 76 registered wetlands, Turkey is one of the richest countries in wetland habitats among the countries in Europe.
Wetland is an area of land that is partly covered with water, or is wet most of the time. Turkey is one the richest countries in terms of wetlands among the countries in Europe and the Middle East.
Because of Turkey is located on the migration path among Europe, Asia and Africa these wetlands have great importance especially for water birds. The wetland that shelters more than 25.000 water birds is categorized as A-level according to IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) criteria. In our country we have 14 wetlands which are categorized as A-level.
Bird Sanctuary Project: During the migration time of birds, they need to rest in some places such as wetlands. The Bird Sanctuary Project aims to protect and develop wetlands in Turkey. The bird sanctuaries host many rare species of birds. A total of 460 bird species are found currently in these wetlands.
Turkey currently has 14 sites designated as Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Sites), with a surface area of 184.487 hectares.

Turkey has a large number of important lakes, deltas and lagoons. Some of these watery areas are below;
